If your problem sounds like this:
- My ping is higher or less stable than usual.
- I keep disconnecting or reconnecting while playing.
- My movement or abilities feel delayed, or players keep rubber-banding around the screen.
Resolution
High latency and disconnections usually mean the connection between your computer and the game server is delayed or unstable. Work through the steps below to rule out common network and software issues.
If your game instead looks choppy because your frame rate is low or dropping, check Low FPS & Framerate Drops. If you're seeing brief freezes or repeated hitches while the game continues running, check Micro-Freezing or Stuttering for League or VALORANT instead.
- Switch to a wired connection. Wireless connections can be affected by distance, interference, and other devices using the same network. If possible, connect your computer directly to your router or modem with an Ethernet cable and test again.
- Power cycle your modem and router. Turn off your modem and router, wait at least 30 seconds, then turn them back on. Once your connection is restored, launch the game and test again.
- Reduce other network usage. Pause downloads, streaming, cloud syncing, and other bandwidth-heavy activity. If possible, temporarily disconnect or power off other devices that are heavily using the same network.
- Reset TCP/IP. Refreshing your network configuration can help clear connection issues caused by stuck or outdated network settings. Reset your network, then reconnect and test the game.
- Switch to a public DNS. Using a public DNS can help rule out issues with your current DNS provider. Follow our DNS configuration guide, then reconnect and test the game again.
- Disable VPNs or proxies. Enabling these services can sometimes help, but they frequently cause connection problems and must be turned off to troubleshoot your connectivity. While these official guides show how to enable your proxy (Windows | Mac) or VPN (Windows | Mac), you can use the exact same menus to turn them off.
- Perform a clean boot. Clearing up background processes can ensure other programs aren't fighting for the spotlight against your game, and a clean boot helps you clear those potential troubles.
- Configure your firewall. Your firewall may be blocking the Riot Client from communicating with our servers. Follow our guide to configure your firewall.
