Your firewall is like a bouncer deciding who gets through the door. Most of the time it's keeping unwanted visitors out, but occasionally it mistakes the Riot Client or your game for someone who isn't on the guest list. Let's help it recognize the right guests.
What Is a Firewall?
A firewall helps protect your computer by controlling network traffic between your device, applications, and the internet. If the Riot Client or your game is blocked, you may run into connection issues even when the rest of your internet connection is working normally.
Rather than leaving your firewall disabled, add the Riot Client and your game to its allowed applications or exceptions list.
Keep Your Firewall and Security Software Updated
If you use third-party firewall or security software, make sure you're running the latest version available from its manufacturer. Updates may include fixes or updated application rules that help recognized software connect normally.
Because third-party security software varies, you may need to check your provider's support site for instructions on managing application exceptions.
Allow Riot Applications Through Windows Firewall
- Press Windows Key 🪟.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Select Allow an app through firewall.
- Select Change settings. You may be asked for administrator permission.
- If the Riot Client or game is already listed, make sure it's allowed through the applicable network types.
- If an application isn't listed, select Allow another app and add it using the applicable path below.

If you installed Riot Games somewhere other than the default location, browse to the folder where your game is installed and select the corresponding application instead.
League of Legends is the Riot game currently supported on macOS. Make sure League and the Riot Client are allowed through the macOS firewall.
- Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Network > Firewall.
- If the firewall is turned off, no additional firewall exception is required. If it's turned on, select Options.
- Click the Add (+) button.
- Select League of Legends, then click Open.
- Set League of Legends to Allow incoming connections.
- If the Riot Client appears as a separate application, add it as well and set it to Allow incoming connections.
- Click OK, then launch League and test your connection again.
If Block all incoming connections is enabled, turn it off while testing League, as this setting can prevent nonessential applications from receiving incoming connections.
Using a Third-Party Firewall or Security App?
There are many different firewall and security applications, so we can't cover every version here. Look for a setting such as Exceptions, Allowed Apps, Allowlist, or Applications, then allow the Riot Client and affected game.
If you're not sure how to configure your security software, check the manufacturer's support documentation for instructions.
Once you've finished configuring your firewall, launch the Riot Client and test your game again. If you temporarily changed any firewall or security settings while troubleshooting, remember to restore your normal protection once you're done.
