Resolution

VAN 185 usually points to a session or connection issue between your game, Riot Client, and Riot Vanguard. Let's get these systems talking again so the healing can begin.

Try these steps in order. We'll start with the quickest fixes first, then move into the bigger ones if Vanguard still needs a little help getting back online. Launch your game after each step to see if it worked.

  1. Check the minimum requirements. If your PC doesn't meet the game's baseline specs, your game, Riot Client, or Vanguard may have trouble launching or staying connected. Make sure your PC meets the minimum requirements for the game you're trying to play.
  2. Disconnect controllers. Some connected devices can interfere with how your game or client starts up. If you have a controller or other unnecessary USB device connected, unplug it, then try launching your game again.
  3. Restart the Riot Client. A fresh Riot Client session can clear temporary login, launch, or connection hiccups. Fully close Riot Client, then open it again and try launching your game.
  4. Log out on other devices. Being signed in on another PC can sometimes cause session conflicts. If you're signed in to Riot Client on another PC, log out there before trying again.
  5. Restart your PC. This gives Vanguard a fresh startup and can resolve many temporary Vanguard connection issues.
  6. Remove and reinstall Vanguard. The quickest way to restore Vanguard's default settings is to manually uninstall it, then restart your PC and launch your game again to reinstall Vanguard.
  7. Perform a clean boot. Background apps or services may interfere with Riot Vanguard, and a clean boot helps you dial in on what exactly is giving you trouble.
  8. Check your connection. If you made it this far, it’s time to bust out the big guns. Follow our PC Connection Troubleshooting Guide for step-by-step instructions on tackling potential connection issues.
  9. Reinstall your game. This can replace corrupted or missing game files that may be preventing Vanguard or your game from launching correctly. Follow our guide to uninstall and reinstall your game.
