  • What does VAN 148 mean?
  • I got kicked out of my game and saw error VAN 148.

Resolution

VAN 148 usually means Riot Vanguard ran into an unexpected issue while starting or checking in with your system. Thankfully the methods of fixing this error are a little more predictable.

Try these steps in order. We'll start with the quickest fixes first, then move into the bigger ones if Vanguard still needs a little help getting back online. Launch your game after each step to see if it worked.

  1. Update Windows. Windows updates can include security and system service changes Vanguard relies on. Install all available Windows updates and restart your PC.
  2. Run the Riot Client as administrator. Windows permissions can sometimes get between Riot Client, your game, and Vanguard. Run the Riot Client with administrator permissions, then try launching your game again.
  3. Set the Vanguard service to start automatically. Having Vanguard installed won't do much good if it's not running when you try to play. If you don't use Vanguard Pre-Check to enable Vanguard to run on-demand, you'll need to set the Vanguard (vgc) service to Automatic.
  4. Perform a clean boot. Background apps or services may interfere with Riot Vanguard, and a clean boot helps you dial in on what exactly is giving you trouble.
  5. Remove and reinstall Vanguard. The quickest way to restore Vanguard's default settings is to manually uninstall it, then restart your PC and launch your game again to reinstall Vanguard.
  6. Check your connection. If you made it this far, it’s time to bust out the big guns. Follow our PC Connection Troubleshooting Guide for step-by-step instructions on tackling potential connection issues.
  7. Reinstall your game. This can replace corrupted or missing game files that may be preventing Vanguard or your game from launching correctly. Follow our guide to uninstall and reinstall your game.
