All accounts are required to have a globally unique username, which is the name you use to log in (and is different from your Riot ID, which displays in-game). If we determine that another player has the same username as you (even if that player is just YOU on a different server), you'll have to change it.
When I log in, it says I need to update.
This happens when you have a username that is not already globally unique, and you'll be prompted to change it to one that is.
- Confirm you understand which account you're updating. Once your new username is set, it can't be changed again.
- Choose a new alphanumeric username (only letters and numbers are allowed - no special characters). The system will give an error message if the chosen name is taken.
- Once you've landed on a unique name, you'll get a confirmation screen of the new username and be prompted to verify your email.
Do that, and you’re all set! You can use the new username to log into the game.
What if I have the same username on a bunch of different servers?
If you have Riot Accounts on multiple servers (including PBE), you’ll need to make sure that each account has a unique name. If you’re the only person with this name worldwide (just on multiple accounts), you can get the username you want on your primary account by making sure you update that one last.
- Figure out all of your accounts that might be blocking each other. If they are all attached to the same email, you should have received an email listing them out for you (the subject line was “Important updates to your Riot Account”).
- Log into your PBE/alternate accounts first on this website and update them however you see fit. We’ve seen a lot of people adding the region to the end to keep track of them.
- Once you’re 100% sure you’ve updated all of your alts and secondary accounts (again, don’t forget PBE), log back in to your primary account. If you were the only person worldwide with that account name, you should be unblocked, so you shouldn’t get the pop-up anymore.
Riot IDs must be unique worldwide
This only works if you’re truly the only person in the world with that username. If anyone in any other region has that username, you might go through that process and still need to change your primary username.
I have lost access and I cannot update my account.
If you’re looking for a list of which usernames might be impacted or need to recover your lost account, try using the Riot Account Recovery tool. It can send you a list of every username you have attached to a specific email address and then help recover your account.
If the tool can't get you sorted, it'll have you submit a ticket to player support with a bunch of identifying information. The more you can tell us about the account, the better your odds of getting it back.
I'm having an issue updating my account. I think I'm stuck in some sort of loop?
We’ve noticed some players have been getting stuck in a loop when trying to change their username. Please try using an Incognito Tab in Chrome, or using a different browser (like Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox), and follow these steps:
- Log out of your account in the Client (press Alt + F4 if you have no other option), and make sure you uncheck the Stay Signed In box.
- Open the Riot Account Update website.
- Log into the desired account and select the correct server.
- Change the username of the selected account.
If the issue still persists, reach out to Player Support and we will figure out our next steps.
