Security Software and Malware Scan

If you're experiencing unexpected crashes, connection drops, or performance issues, malware or outdated security software might be interfering with the Riot Client or Vanguard. Not only does this ruin your match, but malicious software also puts your Riot Account at risk.

Keeping your system clean and updated is the best way to get back in the game and keep your account safe. Start with Windows Security, which is built right into Windows.

Update Windows

Windows updates can include important security fixes and updated protections against newly discovered threats.

Update Windows Security

Before running a scan, make sure Windows Security has the latest security intelligence so it can recognize newer threats.

1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
2. Select Virus & threat protection.
3. Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Protection updates.
4. Select Check for updates.

Run a full scan with Windows Security

A full scan checks the files and programs currently stored on your PC. Depending on the amount of data on your device, this may take some time.

1. Open Windows Security.
2. Select Virus & threat protection.
3. Under Current threats, select Scan options.
4. Select Full scan.
5. Select Scan now.
6. Follow the instructions provided by Windows Security if any threats are detected.

Once the scan is finished and you've handled any threats, restart your PC.

Going One Step Further

If Windows Security does not detect anything but you still suspect malware, consider running a second-opinion scan with a reputable anti-malware tool, such as Malwarebytes or Bitdefender.

Secure Your Riot Account

If your antivirus found and removed malware, your login credentials may have been compromised. Once you are confident your PC is clean, take a moment to secure your Riot Account.

Using multiple security programs

Running multiple real-time antivirus programs at once can cause them to fight each other, resulting in severe system lag and false alarms.

Note that Windows Security usually disables its own real-time protection automatically when you install a third-party tool like Bitdefender or Malwarebytes Premium. If you install another antivirus program, review its documentation to make sure your security programs are not interfering with each other.

Security software is blocking Riot Games

Some security programs may incorrectly block Riot Client, Riot Vanguard, or game files. Make sure your security software is fully updated before changing any of its settings.

If the issue persists, check your antivirus quarantine or protection history to see if it mistakenly flagged a Riot file. Refer to the security software provider's documentation for instructions on reviewing blocked applications or adding exceptions. Common files you may need to allow include:
