New League patcher

We've created a new League patcher that's faster and more stable. We'll launch it over the course of a few patches, so if you don't have it yet, you will soon.

Installing the new patcher

You don't actually have to do anything to start using the new patcher. The old patcher is patching it in a little at a time (there's something existential there). Once it's enabled, League will automatically move your existing game files to where the new patcher can find them. This means you won't have to re-download the game or anything.

This process will only happen once, and should complete within a few minutes depending on your computer speed and how long League's been installed on your machine. As a bonus, you might see that League is using a bit less disk space after the switch.

Patching issues

If you suddenly start getting patching issues, check out this article first. If those don't work, it's probably an issue with the new patcher. First, check to make sure you're actually using the new patcher:

  1. Go to your League of Legends install directory
  2. Go to the Config directory and open the file called LeagueClientSetings.yaml in a text editor like Notepad++
  3. Look for a line that says "game_patcher"available". If it says "true" next to it, then you're using the new patcher, otherwise you're on the old one.

If you're using the new patcher and you're having trouble patching, follow these troubleshooting steps:

Fix file permissions (Windows only)

The patcher needs Administrator privileges to update your League install. If you can't run League as Administrator, then you may have trouble patching. To fix this, you'll need to ask someone who can log into the computer as Administrator to change the file permissions on the League install directory. Here's how to fix permissions:

  1. Go to your Riot Games folder (default patch: C:/Riot Games)
  2. Right-click on the League of Legends folder and select Properties
  3. Go to the Security tab and click Edit
  4. On the top list, select the entry that says Users (or Authenticated Users if you have that too)
  5. On the bottom list, make sure there's a checkmark for "Modify" in the "Allow" column
  6. Click OK to save your changes

Stop old League processes (Windows only)

Sometimes old League processes stick around after you've finished a game and cause problems when updating League. You can stop these old process from your Task Manager:

  1. Close your League client
  2. Open Task Manager by clicking on the Start menu and typing "Task Manager"
  3. Go to the Details tab at the top. If you don't see a Details tab then click "More details" first
  4. Look for any entries on the list named "League of Legends.exe", "LeagueClient.exe", "LeagueClientUx.exe" and "LeagueClientUxRender.exe"
  5. If you have any of those entries, right-click them and select "End Task" to stop them
  6. Open your League client again and try patching
