Hextech Crafting Guide
Earn Hextech Chests through high Champion Mastery scores, or purchase them through the store. Earn keys by playing any matchmade game; keys drop more frequently when you group with friends. Unlock chests with keys to reveal shards, permanents, and essence. Turn shards and essence into permanents, turn permanents into content. That’s it!
The Hextech Crafting table comes with its own inventory separate from your current inventory. You can’t disenchant content that you’ve purchased from the store, and anything you earn in Hextech Crafting must be manually redeemed into your personal inventory before you can use it. It also means that there’s some new content types, so there are a few terms you need to know.

Earn these through achieving a Mastery rank of S- or higher, or purchase them in the store for RP. A chest requires a key to open, and will contain a piece of content and possibly a certain amount of essence. Some details:
Keys, perhaps unsurprisingly, open chests. Key fragments will sometimes drop after victory in any matchmade game mode. Three key fragments can be forged into a single key; you can also purchase keys through the store for RP. Key fragments drop a little more frequently when you play with friends!
Each player's key fragment drop rate is unique. You can earn up to 12 key fragments in a 4 week period, and your drop rate is higher the fewer fragments you've earned in that period. After four weeks, the timer is reset and you'll earn fragments at a higher drop rate again.
Use essence to forge shards into permanent content. There are two types of essence, each unique to the corresponding shard type. Disenchanting a champion shard provides champion essence, which can only be used for unlocking champions. Disenchanting a skin shard provides cosmetic essence, which can only be used for unlocking skins. The essence cost of unlocking a piece of content scales with its RP cost.
You can use champion essence, along with Mastery tokens, to unlock Mastery Levels 6 and 7.
A completed piece of content in your Hextech inventory. As with shards, you can disenchant a permanent, or combine three permanents to receive a random new permanent. Of course, you can redeem it to add it to your account...permanently. Once activated, permanents disappear from your Hextech inventory and are available for use immediately.
You can use a champion permanent, along with Mastery tokens of the same champion, to unlock Mastery levels 6 and 7.
When you choose the "re-roll" option you select 3 permanent shards to use - the 3 permanent shards are burned and the result is automatically added to your champion or skin pool. Think about this carefully before you shout YOLO and slam dunk the re-roll button!
Forge gems into a key-and-chest bundle, or use them to unlock other content. You’ll sometimes find gems in chests alongside another reward.
Used to unlock champions. You can do the following with a champion shard:
You can also use champion shards, along with Mastery tokens of the same champion, to unlock Mastery Levels 6 and 7.
You can purchase Mystery Champion Shards in the store for 195 RP or 1700 IP.
Similar to champion shards, skin shards unlock skins. You can discover cosmetic shards for champions you don’t own, but to redeem them permanently you must first purchase the champion. Cosmetic shards can be any non-limited skin. This means you might find DJ Sona, but you won’t find Victorious Jarvan IV. You can find a list of excluded content here.
Be aware that using a shard to rent a skin ('activating' it) will consume the shard. Rent with caution!
Ward Skin Shard
You can upgrade, activate, reroll, and disenchant these shards, same as the rest. Rerolled ward shards will not award limited ward skins, such as Championship ward skins.
Mastery Tokens are combined with champion shards, permanents, or essence at the crafting table to unlock Champion Mastery levels 6 and 7. Mastery tokens are unique to the champion you earn them on, and each tier has its own requirements:
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do chests contain content that I already own?
Chests are random, and can contain content you may already own.
We're looking at features to allow you to use the duplicate shards in various ways. For now, you can re-roll shards to guarantee a piece of content you don't own, or you can disenchant already-owned shards to help you create permanent content from shards you don't own.
Can I earn content that just got added to the store?
Yes! However, it takes a bit for new content to get added to the Hextech system, so we recommend waiting at least a day after a new item hits the store before trying to roll for anything new.
Why am I not earning chests?
There are a few reasons you might not earn a chest:
- If you're playing a champion you don't own, you can't earn a chest.
If you do earn an S rank on a champion you don't own, allies in your premade group may still earn a chest through your achievement.
- You may have already earned a chest with the champion you're playing.
You can see which champions you've earned chests with by hovering over their portraits in the Champions tab of your profile. When you earn a chest through a premade ally's S rank, the chest counts as though you earned it on the champion you played in that game.
- You may have reached the chest limit for the week.
Your profile has four chest slots, and once you've filled them up you must wait until another chest becomes available. One chest slot opens up per week; you can see how many more days you'll have to wait in your profile.
- You can't earn a chest in a game if you leave that game.
- You may have been punished by a behavior system recently, meaning you won't be able to earn rewards from Hextech Crafting. More on that below.
How does behavior affect loot eligibility?
If you've been punished recently for negative behavior, you'll be locked out of earning chests and keys from playing games for a duration of time.
The length of time you're restricted from earning loot is relative to two things:
- Severity of punishment. You won't earn loot for the duration of your punishment, be it a temporary suspension or a chat restriction.
- Signs of reform. Once your puinshment has ended, you'll continue to be restricted from earning loot until you're recognized to have made significant progress in amending your past behavior. There isn't a specific timeframe for this--it all depends on your behavior.
You can learn more about crafting restrictions here.
Feels like I'm not getting many key fragments anymore. What gives?
The drop rate for key fragments is a curve, not a line. With each fragment you earn, the chance to earn your next one goes down slightly. This number resets roughly every thirty days after you earn your first key fragment.
We wanted to give players who didn't play as frequently a good drop rate for keys, without making it feel like farming was mandatory if you wanted keys.
Note: There's currently a bug which prevents you from earning key fragments if you're playing a champion you don't own. This is unintended, and we're working on a solution.

How do I get the Hextech Ward?
