Your BIOS (or UEFI firmware) is software stored on your motherboard that helps your computer start and communicate with its hardware.

Updating your BIOS can help resolve compatibility issues, improve system stability, and ensure Windows security features work correctly.

Installing an incorrect BIOS version or interrupting the update process may cause your computer to become unstable or fail to start.

How to Update BIOS

Because every manufacturer has a slightly different process, you will need to follow these general steps to update your system.

Find Your System Information 

Before updating your BIOS, you will need to know your exact computer/motherboard model:

  1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type msinfo32 and press Enter to open System Information.
  3. Look for System Model or BaseBoard Product.
  4. Write down the exact model name.

Download the BIOS Update

  1. Go to the official support website of your computer or motherboard manufacturer.
  2. Search for your exact model name.
  3. Navigate to the Support, Downloads, or Drivers section.
  4. Download the latest BIOS/UEFI update file available.

Run the Update

There are usually two scenarios to follow, based on the BIOS update files available to you:

  • If a Windows application (an .exe file) can be downloaded to update your BIOS (usually for laptops and pre-built PCs), you usually just need to double-click it and the BIOS will update automatically. You do not need to manually update the BIOS.
  • If only a .zip file is available (usually for custom PCs), you will need to follow the manual BIOS update steps below

Manually update the BIOS

  1. Extract the files and copy the main BIOS file onto an empty USB Flash Drive.
  2. Restart your PC and repeatedly press Del, F2, F10, or Esc to enter your BIOS settings.
  3. Look for the BIOS update tool. Manufacturers use different names for this, such as EZ Flash, M-Flash, or Q-Flash.
  4. Select the tool, find the file on your USB drive, and confirm the update.
  5. Do Not Interrupt the Process: The update may take a few minutes, and your computer might restart several times. Do not turn off your computer, press any buttons, or unplug the power until Windows has fully booted back up.
