If your problem sounds like this, you're in the right place:
- VAN: STATUS_VMD_9001 - The VMD controller has encountered a fatal unrecoverable error. Process will terminate.
- I received a VAN: STATUS_VMD_9001 error.
- What does VAN: STATUS_VMD_9001 mean?
Resolution
VAN: STATUS_VMD_9001 means Riot Vanguard detected an issue communicating with your system's Intel Volume Management Device (VMD) controller. This is most commonly seen on systems using Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST).
Reinstalling or updating your Intel RST driver will usually resolve this error.
- Download and install the correct Intel RST driver for your system. Where you get this driver depends on the type of computer you have:
- For pre-built PCs: Download and install the latest RST driver directly from your PC manufacturer's official support website, such as Lenovo/Legion, HP/OMEN, Dell/Alienware, ASUS/ROG, MSI, Acer/Predator, or Microsoft Surface.
- For custom-built PCs or older pre-built PCs: If you built your PC yourself, or if your manufacturer no longer provides driver updates for your specific model, download the generic driver from Intel's official support page.
- Restart your computer. Once the installation is complete, reboot your PC to ensure the new drivers take effect, then try launching your game again.
Still having issues?
If you still see the error after reinstalling your Intel RST driver, submit a ticket to Player Support. Make sure you attach your logs so we can take a closer look and help get you back in the game.
