Resolution

An Out of Memory (OOM) error means your PC couldn't provide enough available memory for your game to keep running. This can happen when other programs are using too many resources or Windows doesn't have enough virtual memory available. But don't run off to the Discount Memory Warehouse just yet—you can often get the memory you need with a few quick clicks.

Try these steps in order, and launch your game after each step to see if the issue is resolved.

  1. Restart your PC. Restarting closes temporary processes, frees up memory, and gives your game a clean slate before launching again.
  2. Update your graphics card drivers. Outdated graphics drivers can sometimes cause crashes and memory-related issues. Follow our guide to update your GPU drivers.
  3. Perform a clean boot. Background apps or services may be fighting for the spotlight against your game, and a clean boot helps you clear those potential troubles.

  4. Expand your virtual memory. Windows uses virtual memory when your physical RAM starts running low. Increasing the paging file size may give your game the extra breathing room it needs.

    How to expand virtual memory
    1. Right-click This PC and select Properties.
    2. Select Advanced system settings.
    3. Under Performance, select Settings.
    4. Open the Advanced tab.
    5. Under Virtual memory, select Change.
    6. Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
    7. Select the drive where Windows is installed.
    8. Select Custom size.
    9. Enter an initial and maximum size between 1.5 and 2 times your installed RAM.
    10. Select Set, then OK to apply the changes.
    11. Restart your PC before launching your game again.
  5. Lower your video settings. Reducing your video settings lowers the amount of memory and other system resources your game needs. Set your graphics options to their lowest values, then gradually increase them until you find the right balance between performance and quality.
