Think of vgkbootstatus.dat as the first step of Vanguard’s launch sequence. It helps Vanguard keep track of whether it started correctly when your PC booted up. If that file gets corrupted or stuck in an outdated state, Vanguard may keep running into the same error even after you restart your game or PC.

Deleting this file prompts Vanguard to recreate a fresh copy the next time it starts, so let's tidy up your files:

  1. Fully close your game and the Riot Client.
  2. Press the Windows Key 🪟
  3. Search for File Explorer and select it.
  4. In File Explorer, click the address bar at the top of the window.
  5. Type C:\Windows, then press Enter.
  6. In the top-right search box, type vgkbootstatus.dat, then press Enter.
  7. When vgkbootstatus.dat appears in the search results, right-click it.
  8. Select Delete.
  9. If Windows asks for permission to delete the file, select Continue.
  10. Restart your computer.

Vanguard will then recreate a fresh copy of the file when it starts.
