Title Screen
Your journey begins the moment you open the title screen.
Story Mode
Koeshin's main game mode, full of narrative events and cutscenes.
Completing Story Mode not only earns you the Xin Zhao Icon and Bloom ADC Icon rewards, but opens up the Courtyard so you can build relationships with some of the Spirits of Ionia.
Arcade Mode
All action, no chatting. Arcade mode boasts the same gameplay as Story Mode without any narrative events or cutscenes. It's the perfect way to test your prowess with a speed run, reach the highest score imaginable, or build real life friendships with local co-op.
Local Co-Op
Invite a friend to fight at your literal side in local 2 player co-op, only available for Arcade Mode.
Your friend can hop in whenever Tag is off cooldown, instantly taking control of Yunara to help you bring some balanced beatdowns onto your foes. You'll continue playing on keyboard, while your buddy contributes via controller. Playing co-op will also disable the tag feature since your ally is essentially permanently tagged in.
Once you're both in, things work a little differently:
- Tagging is disabled. Yunara is already there, my dude.
- You both share and contribute to the same Style Meter.
- You both share the Spirit Ability charge, and either of you can cast it when it's available.
- If one of you is knocked out, you'll have a short cooldown before you can rejoin the fight.
- If both of you are knocked out at the same time, that's Game Over.
- You each earn separate stage scores but ultimately contribute to a single final score and grading.
If your partner has to leave in the middle of a game, no worries—just pause the game and hit the Remove P2 button to switch back to solo play.
Local Legends
This feature leverages dark magic unknown by our web wizards, which is why co-op is only available for local play. Online co-op is not supported.
Enter the Courtyard
While combat is at the heart of Battle of Koeshin's gameplay ("Battle" is right there in the title, after all), the Courtyard's Spirit Bond system is the soul of its meta progression. Once you've earned some Petals and completed the Story Mode, visit the Courtyard to gift your Petals to Spirits, thus improving your relationship and earning rewards. More details can be found on this system near the end of this article.
Saving Progress & Stage Select
Your progress will automatically be saved every time you complete a stage, allowing you to come back and jump in right where you left off whenever you like. You can also select any stages you've completed to start from there, but be forewarned that this will overwrite your current save.
Gameplay
Traverse the First Lands with Xin Zhao and Yunara in League's first sidescrolling beat 'em up.
Controls
Your keyboard holds the keys to playing Koeshin:
| Command | Keyboard |
| Up | W |
| Down | S |
| Left | A |
| Right | D |
| Jump | Spacebar |
| Attack | J |
| Special | K |
| Tag | E |
| Spirit Ability | L |
You can adjust keyboard keybinds in the Options, but co-op controller keybinds cannot be changed.
Style Points
Taking out your enemies is great and all, but doing it in style is the best way to increase your damage and bolster your score.
Earning Style Points
You gain Style Points by fighting with… well, style. All of the following actions will help you build your Style Points:
- Successful attacks (amount gained are equivalent to damage dealt)
- Air attacks (fixed amount per attack)
- Wall-bouncing enemies (fixed amount per bounce)
- Tagging in your partner (fixed amount per tag)
In addition to the tips above, it's important to keep your moves varied. If you perform the same attack within your last eight moves, that attack will earn 50% fewer Style Points for each repetition. If you really want to style on your enemies, mix up your tactics and keep your combos fresh.
Losing Style Points
Style Points can also be lost in two ways:
- Not attacking for a while (gradual decay)
- Getting hit by enemies (percentage of current Style Rank lost instantly)
Style Points decay more quickly at higher Style Ranks, so keep your combos alive with constant battle while avoiding taking damage to earn the best rewards.
Once the Style Meter reaches zero at the current rank, it starts to blink. Three seconds later, the Style Meter disappears—along with all of its buffs.
Style Rank and Buffs
Your Style Rank increases when you surpass specific thresholds of Style Points. Once you reach C or higher, you'll get special buffs to boost your damage and your score.
| Rank | Threshold | Decay | Bonus Stage Score | Damage Multiplier |
| E | 0 | 10/s | 0x | 1x |
| D | 100 | 15/s | 0x | 1x |
| C | 250 | 20/s | 0.2x | 1.1x |
| B | 450 | 30/s | 0.4x | 1.2x |
| A | 700 | 40/s | 0.6x | 1.3x |
| S | 1000 | 55/s | 0.8x | 1.4x |
| S+ | 1350 | 70/s | 1x | 1.5x |
Spirit Abilities
At S+, you'll notice the flower behind your Style Rank start to open up. Make it bloom to earn a Spirit Ability charge, empowering you to unleash a Spirit Ability. This Ability remains available until you decide to use it, but be forewarned that it will immediately reduce your Style Rank to 0. Such power comes at a cost!
Cast your Spirit Ability to summon a random Spirit, who will then perform their signature ability. These abilities are strong finishing moves that can turn the tide of battle.
Karma - Soulflare
- Karma fires a bolt down from the sky in front of you, damaging all nearby enemies, knocking them up.
Kayle - Divine Judgement
- Kayle grants you an invulnerability shield for a short time which damages all nearby enemies when it expires.
Irelia - Bladesurge
- Irelia dashes through all enemies on screen, knocking them up and freezing them for a short time before knocking them back.
Zed - Living Shadows + Razor Shuriken (W / Q)
- Zed creates multiple shadows around the screen, throwing shurikens in the direction of your attacks.
Items
Keep an eye out for various consumable items as you travel the world. They can drop when you perform multi-KOs, but are also sometimes just found as part of a stage.
| Item | Effect |
| Onigiri | Replenishes 100 Health (+50 Score it Health is full) |
| Dango | Replenishes 200 Health (+100 Score it Health is full) |
| Tea | Replenishes 400 Spirit (+50 Score it Spirit is full) |
| Sake | Replenishes 800 Spirit (+100 Score it Spirit is full) |
Getting a High Score
Don't just defeat your enemies—totally demoralize them with a tremendous score. Read on to see how to maximize your score.
- Damage Score - 1 score point per damage dealt. (Overkill damage is not included)
- Style Bonus - When the Style Meter expires at certain ranks, you earn score points based on the total damage dealt while your meter was active.
- Time Bonus - The faster you complete a stage, the more score points you can earn (6 points per second remaining until a specified target time). Note that you'll only earn points for completing a stage quickly—there is no penalty for taking your time.
- Health Bonus - Your team's remaining health at the end of a stage is converted into score points.
- No Death Bonus - Complete a stage without dying to earn a fixed number of score points.
- Perfect Stage - Complete stage without taking any damage to get a bonus multiplier to your total stage score.
- Item Pickup Bonus - Grab items when your Health or Spirit are already full to earn score points instead. (50/100 points for small/large items)
The Courtyard
Battling enemies is great, but what about building friendships…or more?
The Battle of Koeshin includes a Spirit Bond meta game that goes something like this: play League to earn points (with bonuses if you equip Spirit Blossom Skins or play as Xin Zhao or Yunara), complete missions to get Petals, then gift those Petals to Spirits to build your relationship and unlock rewards like BXP and emotes.
Champions and Relationships
Four champion Spirits await you in Koeshin's Courtyard. Each Spirit starts at Spirit Bond Level D, but can be improved to C > B > A > S > S+ by gifting a Petal for each level.
Earning Petals
If you purchase a Battle Pass, you get 3 Petals right out of the gate.
For the rest, however (or if you're earning all your Petals the old-fashioned way), you need points.
You earn 1 point for every minute you play in any matchmade mode (including Co-Op VS AI, ARAM, etc.), but you can speed up your progress by truly immersing yourself in the Spirit Blossom experience:
- Play as Xin Zhao or Yunara to get +30% points.
- Equip any Spirit Blossom skin to get +30% points.
- Equip a Spirit Blossom 2025 skin to get +100% points.
Keep in mind that these bonuses do not stack, so the maximum boost you can get is 100%.
You'll need 15 points to earn your first Petal.
The second, however, requires 125 points, and each one after that generally costs 5 more points than the last (130 points for the 3rd Petal, 135 for the 4th, etc.)—though there are a few levels where the number of points required does not increase.
Spirit Bond Levels and Rewards
Though you start earning Petals right away, you can't gift them to the Spirits until you complete Story Mode.
Once you've done that, you can give Petals to Spirits to build your relationships, unlocking rewards and narrative tidbits:
| Spirit Bond Level | Petals Required | Reward |
| D to C | 1 | 100 BXP |
| C to B | 1 | 100 BXP |
| B to A | 1 | 100 BXP |
| A to S | 1 | 100 BXP |
| S to S+ | 1 | Special Emote for that Spirit |
Spirit Bond progress is unique for each Spirit, so you'll need 20 Petals in total to get them all to S+.
